IDS Seminar: A Business Approach to Food Security

idsseminarListen to Chris Brett (speaker), John Humphrey (chair) and FAC researcher, Jim Sumberg (attendee) discuss what they took from the seminar, A Business Approach to Food Security, IDS (31 May 2011) and what they think the food industry should do in order to prioritise development goals. Hear the interviews on Mixcloud below.

About the presentation – Food security is top of both national and international agendas, the Feed the Future initiative is a prime example. Many emerging countries import staples, for example there are large flows of rice from Asia to Africa, Olam is involved in this supply chain. Olam procures, semi-processes and transport in excess of 1 million tonnes of rice and delivers it to various African countries. Based on this trade flow and clear growing market demand for rice, especially in the urban centres, Olam has invested in rice production in Africa. Nigeria will be looked at as a specific case study.
