Space, Markets and Employment in Agricultural Development

Roadside marketAgricultural development is key to food security and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa.  However, agriculture is only likely to contribute to sustainable and intensive growth if productivity gains on the ground are matched by growth in non-farm employment.


The Space, Markets and Employment in Agricultural Development project examines the connections between farm and non-farm activities in rural economies. We are focusing on markets, settlements and employment in three Southern African countries: South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Space, markets and employment: 3 films from Zimbabwe

smead-filmA new series of films explores the links between land reform and economic activity in Zimbabwe, focusing on three commodities: tobacco, beef and horticulture.

The films are produced for the ‘Space, Markets and Employment in Agricultural Development’ (SMEAD) project by Pamela Ngwenya, supported by the field team. They are accompanied by an overview film.

Zimbabwe is one of three countries where the SMEAD project has undertaken case studies. The others are Malawi and South Africa.

Zimbabwe's cattle and beef business: times of change

The cattle and beef business is thriving in Zimbabwe’s Masvingo province, but it has changed.

A large scale commercial ranching sector has been replaced by smaller and medium sized producers. The first in a series of blog posts for our project on Space, Markets and Employment in Agricultural Development looks at what aid agencies and consultants might learn from on-the-ground reality.

New film: Cultivating Unemployment

cultivatingA new documentary film, Cultivating Unemployment, looks at jobs and poverty in the rural economy in South Africa. It was produced by the Space, Markets and Employment project.

The documentary takes the viewer on a visual journey through a South African town and nearby farmland, looking at the opportunities for job creation, large and small farmers, suppliers and markets.

ZimZimbabwe is one of the 3 case study countries of the Space, Markets and Employment in Agricultural Development project.

A new research update shows the links between farm and non-farm employment in Masvingo province - both within the province and beyond its borders.
