Hubs

Eastern Africa

The Eastern Africa hub is hosted by the Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural Policy and Development (Nairobi, Kenya).

The Tegemeo Institute conducts Research and Analysis on policy in the domain of agriculture, rural development, natural resources and environment. The Institute aims at addressing micro and macroeconomic policy issues bearing on farming, transportation, processing, marketing, and trade of agricultural products and inputs; sustainability of agricultural systems and natural resources as well as the environment; and commercialization, income growth and food security.

Tegemeo’s approach is to combine research, capacity building and outreach. The institute has influenced policy formulation by participating in the preparation and formulation of key Government strategy documents in Kenya.

Southern Africa

The Southern Africa hub is hosted by the Institute of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies – PLAAS (Cape Town, South Africa).

PLAAS was founded in 1995 as a specialist unit in the School of Government, Economic and Management Sciences Faculty at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Town. Since then, PLAAS has developed a proven track record of undertaking high-quality research on land and agrarian reform, poverty, and natural resource management in South Africa and the southern African region.

Besides research and postgraduate teaching, PLAAS undertakes training, provides advisory, facilitation and evaluation services and is active in the field of national policy development. Through these activities, and by seeking to apply the tools of critical scholarship to questions of policy and practice, we seek to develop new knowledge and fresh approaches to the transformation of society in southern Africa.

Western Africa

The Western Africa hub is hosted at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research – ISSER (Accra, Ghana).

ISSER  was established in 1962 as the Institute of Statistics to provide a programme of teaching and research in statistics. In 1969, it was reorganized and renamed the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic research with an expanded mandate  to conduct research in the social sciences in order to generate solutions for national development.

ISSER currently serves as the research wing of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ghana and engages in a number of policy relevant research whose findings are intended to help policy makers on the best policy decisions to make for national development.

Europe

The Europe hub is hosted by the Institute of Development Studies – IDS (Brighton, UK).

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a leading global charity for international development research, teaching and communications.

IDS hosts six dynamic research teams, several popular postgraduate courses, and a family of world-class knowledge services. These three spheres are integrated in a unique combination – as a development knowledge hub, IDS is connected into, and is a convenor of, networks throughout the world.

The Institute is home to approximately 100 researchers, 40 knowledge services staff, 65 professional staff and about 200 students at any one time. But the IDS community extends far beyond, encompassing an extensive network of over 250 partners, 1600 alumni and hundreds of former staff across the development community worldwide.
